Genetics

Decoding life, shaping the future of science

Genetics at Ludlow University delves into the study of genes, heredity and the molecular mechanisms that define all living organisms. You’ll explore how genetic information is passed on, how it changes, and how it influences everything from evolution to human health.

Our courses combine molecular biology, biotechnology and data analysis to help you understand how genetics drives scientific discovery and medical innovation. Through hands-on lab work and research projects, you’ll develop the technical and analytical skills needed to work in fields ranging from healthcare and agriculture to conservation and genomics.

Molecular exploration

Study the structure, function and regulation of genes using bioinformatics and molecular analysis tools.

Practical laboratory skills

Learn core techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis and genome analysis in modern teaching labs.

Research and discovery

Engage with the latest research in genetics, from evolutionary biology to personalised medicine and gene therapy.

Ethics and innovation

Explore the ethical and social implications of genetic research in medicine, agriculture and biodiversity.

Collaboration and creativity

Work on group projects that combine problem-solving, data interpretation and creative scientific thinking.

What you’ll learn

Genetics at Ludlow gives you a strong foundation in molecular biology, heredity and genome science.
You’ll study:

  • molecular genetics and genomics
  • cell biology and biochemistry
  • human and medical genetics
  • evolution and population genetics
  • bioinformatics and data analysis
  • biotechnology and ethical considerations in genetics

Teaching combines lectures, laboratory classes, workshops and research projects. Assessment includes lab reports, written assignments, data analysis tasks, presentations and a final independent research project.

Life as a genetics student

As a genetics student at Ludlow, you’ll spend much of your time in our modern teaching and research laboratories, gaining practical experience with advanced molecular techniques. You’ll learn how to collect, analyse and interpret genetic data, while also exploring how these discoveries are shaping medicine, agriculture and conservation.

Our academic team includes active researchers working in fields such as genomics, microbial genetics, molecular evolution and biotechnology. You’ll have opportunities to take part in research projects and fieldwork, or to collaborate with staff on studies addressing real-world scientific questions.

You’ll also engage in discussions about the wider implications of genetic technology - from genome editing and personalised medicine to conservation genetics - preparing you to think critically about the future of science and society.

Career paths

A degree in genetics from Ludlow prepares you for a wide range of scientific and applied careers. Graduates go on to work in research, biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and bioinformatics.
