Engineering students win national design challenge

A team of Mechanical Engineering students from Ludlow University has triumphed at the UK Engineering Design Challenge, taking first place with their innovative wind-powered water pump designed to provide sustainable water access for rural and off-grid communities.

The competition, hosted in London, brought together over 30 university teams from across the country, each tasked with designing a practical engineering solution addressing global sustainability goals. Ludlow’s team impressed judges with their combination of mechanical simplicity, low-cost components, and high efficiency, ensuring the system could be easily built and maintained in developing regions.

We wanted to design something practical with real social impact. The experience has been invaluable.

Team leader, Aria Andersson

The team will now move into prototype testing in collaboration with CleanTech UK, with potential field trials planned for later this year. The win highlights Ludlow University’s strong focus on applied learning, innovation, and engineering for social good.
